A number of Google Workspace apps have improved drag-and-drop and mouse support
Google is taking foldables and other large-screen devices seriously, as the company is confirmed to be working on the Google Pixel Tablet, and a foldable tablet is also rumored to be coming soon. It also means preparing Google apps for larger form factors and adding features that make sense on larger screens. As such, the company is adding drag-and-drop improvements and full mouse support to several Workspace apps.
As announced in the Workspace blogpost, Google Slides now supports dragging and dropping text and images from one slide to another or to other apps — as long as the recipient supports drag-and-drop. Google has already enabled other Workspace apps to support this, so you should be able to use it while working in different Google apps. Keep is probably the most prominent example here, adding support for image drag and drop in July 2022.
Similarly, the Google Drive app lets you drag and drop files and folders to upload them. Google has built on top of that and now lets you drag and drop files and folders in Drive to move them around. This is possible in both single-window mode and the two-window mode that Drive offers.
Last but not least, Google Docs now works entirely with a computer mouse. This means that the curse now responds as you would expect. This is evident when you try to select text by left-clicking and dragging. Previously, it reflected touch gestures and allowed you to scroll through the document instead of highlighting.
It’s clear that Google wants to get its own apps to launch its big-screen devices. Given that Android has supported drag and drop for ages, it’s a shame that the company is finding that some of its apps still lack these options, but better late than never.
