“This campaign is all about the Christmas Spirit – a season of giving, being together and thinking about more,” said Jim DelCiopo, editor of The Tablet. “We are always inspired by the responses we receive from our readers and excited to see the fruits of their generosity.”

DelCioppo noted that with record inflation driving up the cost of essential goods and people still recovering from the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to support those struggling to survive.

Last year, the campaign raised more than $115,000 — a new record — to help diocesan and church-based groups, as well as religious education programs that request resources to pass on to others. This year, due to the additional need, we are setting an even higher goal of $125,000.

Over the past decade, the campaign has raised and distributed nearly $1.4 million to purchase Christmas gifts, food, faith teaching materials and other necessities. Bright Christmas began in the 1960s under the leadership of Deacon Don Zirkle, former editor of The Planet magazine, when the inner-city children’s movement was growing.

At that time, the fund consisted of several thousand dollars and was distributed to parishes in the diocese so that the children could attend Christmas.

Pastors, parish administrators and diocesan group directors should contact The Tablet as soon as possible for help this Christmas.

The campaign will only donate funds to church groups and outreach efforts within the Diocese of Brooklyn that seek help to illuminate this holy season that focuses on the most important gifts of family and faith.
