Manufacturers admit they are ready to lead the charge. “I see a lot of brands trying to build their own NFT program and sell everyone the same product,” says Wilson. “It makes more sense for them to reach out to individual creatives to create and collaborate.” This points to the same reason brands have joined independent producers in Web2: consumer trust. “You can’t buy NFT without the support of the community in that area that is ready to support it.”

High winds

Not everyone believes it, because of the power of technology and culture.

“I don’t think this is going to be a catalyst for mass adoption of blockchain,” said Forrester’s Bennett, adding that crypto currency requirements will limit adoption. “It’s worth remembering that most consumers don’t really care about NFTs,” he adds.

Currently, the feature is only supported by the Polygon blockchain, adding another friction point. Artist Wilson’s NFTs to date are on Ethereum. Taking part in a preliminary test, he does not participate in this one, because it is a constraint. Discussions about expansion are ongoing, Instagram’s Amoruwa said. Forrester’s Bennett doesn’t see an issue here: “[Polygon] that’s where the center of energy is at the moment,” he said. Polygon points rose by nearly 40 percent after Meta announced it would use the blockchain for Instagram digital collections.

There is also uncertainty about whether Instagram is the right platform. “What we don’t want is a repeat of Web2, where the monopoly of information and data is driven by big corporate brands,” said digital architect Fung, who is still open to engine on Instagram. “I hope that the power and ownership will remain with the creators and the communities.”

According to singer and artist Aluna, Instagram may not require the learning curve of Web3 native platforms; Education is “critical” to his ability to navigate space, he said. “If we continue to push education, we will find balance.” He says he thinks this is a win-win as more people get their first chance at the NFT space. “One of the biggest developments we need is access, and this is a big step in that direction.”
