Goa sportsmen runout by non-Goans

Goa hosts some Sports Associations that promote non-Goans. Such Associations exist on paper without efforts to organize competitions/training/equipment

PANJIM: Gujarat did it in 100 days, but the Goa government could not host the National game despite a double-engined Sarkar for seven years! Worse, Goa occupied the second-last position in the medal count for the first time.

Goa and North Eastern states were considered ‘backward’ in Sports two decades ago. However, today the North Eastern states are proud of Olympic medalists and Goa is nowhere to be found.

There should be a reorientation of the existing schemes run by the Government of Goa. The scheme has remained the same since the time this writer was the Director of Sports & Youth Affairs in 1993. It should be revised keeping in mind the four-year Olympics cycle. In fact, the Government of India is taking more care of sportspersons from the junior level onwards and that is why the state sports department and sports associations should give more thrust to identify talent and grassroots training .

Ironically, Goa hosts some sports associations that promote non-Goans. Such associations exist only on paper with no efforts to organize competitions/training/equipment but rather to provide only a platform for the participation of non-Goans in National competitions with huge donations for personal gain. These out-of-turn favors are often granted in lieu of profit and votes in exchange for supporting the favored candidate in the Goa Olympic Federation/Association elections.

Take the example of the Goa Olympic Association. The representative has occupied a position of power for the last two decades, being re-elected countless times, despite the warning letters on illegality dated 22.07.22,11.07.22 issued by IOA to GOA In the absence of any framed policy for state sports. associations, this has resulted in sportsmen of Goan origin, who otherwise represent teams at the Olympics and international competitions in other countries, are no longer visible in the Indian contingent.

The registration of Sports Associations should be reviewed

The registration of sports associations must be reviewed with the sports code under the Society Act 1860. It is imperative therefore that a domicile of more than 30 years must be made mandatory to allow members to join the state sports associations as office bearers.

In another example, Mr. Bhupender Singh Bajwa has been the President of the Goa Wushu Association and the President of the Wushu Association of India for more than a decade. At the conclusion of the Lusofonia Games in 2014, the Rs 40 lakh Wushu platform donated by China was assembled at Bajwa Godwin Public School, Meerut, UP despite a Personal Exemption Certificate and transport paid by the Government of Goa .

When this writer raised this issue during his tenure at CRC Bhopal MP in 2014. Mr. Bajwa along with two other federations, met DG, SAI, in Delhi and informed that they did not conduct the national coaching camp in Bhopal until this writer was published. of the Central Region. This writer was appointed as SAI Head of his new scheme in 2011 in preparation of Indian teams for Olympics 2020. During the third year after the implementation of Dias scheme, India won 187 medals in junior international events. Result: Up to 128 qualified for Tokyo Olympics 2020. A similar scheme has been drafted by this writer for identifying Goan talent for the 2036 Olympics, but the proposal has been in the IAS, Secretary Level. Moreover, this writer had also given in writing to the CM that Rs 40 cr will be brought with his support from the Center in order to implement this scheme effectively in Goa, but to no avail.

In addition to this, many companies have cheated the State by building sports infrastructure for the National Games at exorbitant prices compared to other states. The indigenous filtration plant installed instead of an imported one in the Campal pool complex, double turf hockey installed, replaced and awarded with another contract, against the rules, in addition to many other debatable issues. The State Government. should refer these cases to the Competition Commissioner of India to get refund of money.
