Salto, the French broadcasting service owned by TF1, M6 and France Télévisions, may change hands or close in the near future, Various types you confirmed.
This service, launched in 2020 after several delays, was created by three French TV groups in an attempt to offer subscribers an alternative to Netflix (now with more than 13 million subscribers in France) and other global services.
Priced at €6.99 ($7.23) per month, Salto had only 523,000 subscribers in June 2021 and was placed behind other local broadcasters, including Canal+, OCS, beIN and RMC at the end of last year, according to of research conducted by NPA Conseils/Harris interactive. Tensions began to rise between France Télévisions and two commercial channels, TF1 and M6, after they announced their proposed merger plans in May 2021. Télévisions de France president Delphine Ernotte said the French broadcaster wants out of Salto, and TF1 and M6 said they would buy it. The merger plans were abandoned by TF1 and M6 after the French anti-trust body raised several concerns. It is not known where Ernotte stands on the subject behind this new development. Belmer, who used to run Canal Plus Group, said that after taking over TF1 Group as managing director, he thought about getting out. Belmer will become president of Team TF1 in February, succeeding Gilles Pelisson. The company also has its own streaming platform, MyTF1.
A meeting between Salto’s three shareholders will be held before the end of the month to decide how to proceed with the distributor, according to local media outlet La Lettre A which first reported the news about Salto. Options include shutting down the service or selling it.
