The ease with which one can post a video to a social media platform is normal for the most disturbing content to find its way onto one’s timeline with all things thought and thought. Social media did their best to remove these videos before they were seen, but even this is why many videos slip through the cracks.
The Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition, or SMACC for short, has published a report detailing the shocking number of animal cruelty videos that can be found on almost every social media platform out there. This includes Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. With all of this being said and now gone, it’s important to note that the SMACC found 840 animal cruelty videos that received 11.8 billion views between them.
Most of these videos, or 60% to be exact, were found on Facebook. That’s not surprising since Facebook has the most MAUs among all social media platforms, but it’s an odd number. YouTube has the same number of MAUs as Facebook, but only 25% of the videos analyzed in this report were found on the video streaming site. It says Facebook doesn’t have the ability to download videos, and the company’s other efforts make it less effective than it might be.
The types of animal cruelty seen in those videos are very different. They were all involved in people doing harm to innocent animals. Most of these animals are wild animals that are kept as pets, which is a violation of their rights because this is the type of thing that prevents them from re-entering their homes. Social media platforms need to be better at handling this information otherwise animals will continue to suffer.
