In view of heavy rainfall warning on Friday, the Gurgaon district administration has advised all corporate offices and private institutions in the district to direct employees to work from home tomorrow to avoid traffic jams and ensure repair work on roads and drains.
Following heavy rains in Delhi and NCR today, pedestrians were forced to wade through severely flooded lanes and main roads.
The IMD had earlier said, “On 22, 23, 25 and 26 September over Haryana and Chandigarh in East Uttar Pradesh and on 22-24 September in East Rajasthan. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over East Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh on 22 September 2022.”
“Scattered and fairly widespread light/moderate rains with isolated heavy rain and thundershowers/thundershowers are very likely over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh on 22-25,” the Met Bureau said.
Heavy traffic jam in Delhi due to rain
The Delhi Traffic Police helpline today received 23 calls related to traffic jams, seven related to waterlogging and two related to uprooting of trees from different parts of the city.
Due to heavy rains, traffic related calls were received from Khajuri Chowk, Goala Dairy, Yamuna Bridge, Outer Ring Road West Bihar, Rohini Sector-8, Hanuman Mandir Pusa Road, Azad Market, Dwarka Flyover, Dhaula Kuan to Gurgaon.
Waterlogging was also reported near AIIMS flyover, Rajdhani Park to Mundka, Nigambodh Ghat, Mayapuri flyover among others, they said, while trees were reported uprooted from Burari and Abai Marg.
Delhi Traffic Police also took to Twitter to guide commuters about the traffic situation.
“Due to waterlogging, traffic is affected on carriageway from Mahipal Pur red light towards Mehrauli. Traffic is affected at Ferni Road and Tuda Mandi red light, Najafgarh due to waterlogging,” it tweeted.
“Avoid traveling on Mahatma Gandhi Marg from Motibag Junction towards Dhaula Kuan due to waterlogging near Shanti Niketan,” it said in another tweet.
The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’, warning people of scattered heavy rainfall that could reduce visibility, disrupt traffic and damage unpaved roads and vulnerable structures.
Some parts of Delhi may experience light rain in the next two to three days, it added.
The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, has recorded just 58.5 mm of rainfall in September so far compared to the normal 108.5 mm of rainfall.
