For most people, the thought of climate change and a deteriorating environment is overwhelming. The way to receive and process information about the environment depends on how it is given to me.
Video of the ground on fire with warning lights? Are the graphics good and easy to read? Many – myself included – prefer to take our conversations through the afterword.
Making myself aware of the environment is something that is beyond me. During my years on Instagram, I have built a database, full of authentic Instagram accounts that I trust to give me honest information in an interesting format.
The two types of accounts I want to highlight are individuals and military organizations. Organizations range from advertising companies to foundations and nonprofits.
Green Matters (@matomatomatomato)
“Green Matters is dedicated to making news and topics across sustainability accessible to everyone”
Green Matters is a media site and Instagram account that shares articles and graphics on a wide range of environmental topics. They find celebrities and individuals who are different, and in an interview with Rainn Wilson, he changed his middle name to spread awareness about the climate crisis.
Environmental Action Group (@the environmental action group)
“We empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment.”
The Environmental Action Group is an advocacy organization that highlights harmful foods and products for consumers to avoid. These include product recalls and pesticides in products, while distributing “EWG Verified” products and sustainable exchanges to create in your life.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (@nrdc_org)
“The World’s Best Defense”
This non-profit account is a great place to keep up with information on environmental laws, court decisions and how governments around the world are working, with unemployment, and climate change. If you want to work and stay politically informed, this account will be your best friend.
earth.org (@earthorg)
“Delivering the truth about climate change through data-driven reporting.”
This account and news website provides weather-related information in an easy-to-read format that’s perfect for reporting and sharing with your students.
Next Friday (@fridaysforfuture)
“International Fridays for the future. Youth initiative. Global climate action”
This movement – started by Greta Thunberg – will hold a global climate strike every Friday. The account will provide information about what they do and how you can access it. This account is great for Gen Zers who want to be inspired by a youth-led climate movement.
Environment by Impact (@natural)
“Follow us for the latest on all things earth, weather news, and social + human impact.”
This account will post some of my favorite graphics that are informative and well researched. They share advice and guidance on how to be sustainable.
The Future Earth Foundation (@whenua future)
“It’s a club climate. Everyone is invited, our sources are always there.
I would like to clarify this account for their ongoing “Good News Tuesday”. This is my favorite Tuesday, among the negatives I can see from other sources. It’s inspiring and helpful to think about the impact of the actions we all take to fight climate change.
Meteorology (@ahurangi)
“As Al Gore affirmed, we are uniting the world to stop climate change and build a healthy and prosperous future through clean energy”
This non-profit organization provides information on government climate initiatives, especially COP 27 which is currently underway. They point out the words that need to be understood and the issues that affect the world.
Next up are inspiring people doing their part in their own way to learn, support, and make a difference on Earth.
Kathryn Kellogg (@going.zero.waste)
“Eco-friendly and frugal living”
Kathryn Kellogg’s is one of my favorite accounts to follow, as she provides real sustainable lifestyle changes to incorporate into your life. Her journey has been quite an exciting one – from living a low-waste lifestyle to writing her 2019 book, “101 Ways to Go Zero Waste” and maintaining a successful blog. One of my favorite things about it is sharing good stories about nature every Friday, which always ends my week with inspiration.
Venetia La Mana (@venetialamanna)
“Beauty Promoter”
Venetia La Manna shows the bad and unsustainable behavior of famous brands and company owners. He often tells these stories while cooking, in an engaging and conversational format.
Alexis Nicole (@blackforager)
“Educator and Natural Science enthusiast”
Alexis Nikole is a teacher who shares entertaining videos that educate her audience about the natural world. His positivity and energy are contagious – sure to bring a smile to your face and inspire you to learn.
Kristy Drutman (@browngirl_green)
“I turn the weather into humor, healing conversations, and educational tools for action.”
Kristy Drutman runs the successful Instagram Green Jobs Board which is a great resource to follow for those looking to keep a job in the green world. Not only that, but he is a speaker, podcast host and writer on important environmental topics.
