The coronavirus pandemic has given us all a glimmer of false hope for the tablet market. However, that hope appears to have been misplaced as the tablet market declined for the fifth quarter in a row.
Basically, we all knew it was inevitable. Being forced to stay inside has led many people to look for gadgets to help pass the time. Cause and effect: the tablet market has grown slightly.
However, now that the pandemic is waning, so are tablet sales. We’ve seen the meteoric rise of the tablet market over the past couple of years, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change.
The tablet market is in decline for the fifth quarter in a row
For the past few years, tablets have been fighting to keep their place between smartphones and computers, so it’s no surprise that they’re struggling right now.
According to Canalys, the tablet market saw no growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. Its highest quarter of the year was in the 1st quarter of 2021. North of 50 million tablets shipped and that represents 50% year-over-year growth.
However, in Q3 2022 we saw a 6% decline compared to Q3 2021. This reduced the total number of units shipped to 35.3 million.
The tablet market is shrinking not only due to low demand, but also due to supply chain issues and the deteriorating economy.
It’s a perfect storm of bad scenarios that has put not only the tablet market in trouble, but the Chromebook and smartphone markets as well. Unfortunately, these conditions are likely to continue for the next few years.
However, there is some good news for the tablet market. While the tablet market has seen a decline, it’s still slightly above pre-pandemic lows. In 2019, nearly 25 million units were shipped worldwide. This was the lowest quarter in recent history. Also, although it’s not much, shipments were up 1% in Q3 2022 compared to Q2 2022.
We don’t know how long this will last, but it’s nice to know that companies are still shipping tablets.
