CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – The City of Charlottetown will spend nearly $29,000 on 11 new pro tablets for the mayor and council.

The City Council passed a resolution at its Nov. 14 regular public meeting to accept IMP Solutions’ bid of $28,978.14 including taxes.

These tablets will replace 11 tablets in the mayor and council.

That’s over $2,600 per tablet.

Coun. According to Alanna Yankow, when the tablets cost just over $1,000 in local stores, it feels like an expensive purchase.

“We bought the pills four years ago,” said Yankov. “It’s like a big number. I was wondering if we are moving to a paperless system here.”

Coun. Julie McCabe said before the meeting she was asked by those who saw it on the council’s agenda, including members of the public, whether tablets were “necessary or necessary”. Kevin Ramsay asked if the old tablets are being resold.

Rory Chaison, the city’s information technology specialist, told the council that the tablets must be business-grade, and that the devices generally have a four-year life cycle.

“There’s also a common issue with older tablets slowing down,” Chaisson said.

SaltWire Network spoke with Chasen after receiving questions from those advisors.

Chason said the city’s request for proposals requires the devices to be equipped with the Windows 10 and Windows 11 Pro operating systems.

The city also owns Brunnet and Northern Micro Inc. received bids from their companies, but both canceled their bids.
