Premium Tablet of the Year: Apple iPad Air 5th Gen

Surprise! The best tablet of 2022 is the iPad, but despite its undeniable brilliance, it’s the second year in a row that we’ve yet to award a Pro. No, the iPad of choice this year is the latest iPad Air. While it doesn’t look that different from last year’s model, the 5th Gen Air is a much more aggressive beast under its all-screen hood. To our surprise, Apple felt generous enough to give its mid-range crossover the same M1 chip as its big brother, meaning it will happily destroy anything you throw at it.

5G is now an option on the cellular model, and the 12MP ultra-wide selfie camera is a big improvement, and while the 10.9-inch display doesn’t have ProMotion (hey, it’s in the title), it’s still pretty cool for your latest Netflix prize. . iPadOS continues to improve, so if you slap this thing on the Magic Keyboard, you’ve got a laptop that’s no alternative.

Highly Commended: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

Thought the iPad Pro was overkill? Apple’s most premium tablet is the cat next to Samsung’s beast. With a 14.6-inch display, you won’t be able to use this slate with one hand. But tighten it up and you’ve got a great portable entertainment center, especially with its AMOLED panel and four speakers. And with the S Pen in the box, which delivers the lowest latency of any Samsung tab to date at 2.8ms, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is just as good for cinephiles as it is for artists on the go. It’s certainly not cheap, but that money will buy you a great Android tablet.

Budget tablet of the year: Honor Pad 8

If we told you that the first Honor tablet to be launched internationally has a 12.9-inch display, you’d think it’s playing a piece of the premium pie. But in reality, the big-screen Honor Play 8 has an entry-level iPad in its sights, as well as tablets like the impressive Lenovo Tab P11. Why is this our winner? Yes, this panel is hard to get rid of, you can certainly get the biggest one for the least amount of money.

Thanks to its 10:6 aspect ratio black bar, we enjoyed watching movies on it, and its meaty 7250mAh battery will see you comfortably through a reasonably long 3D. It’s certainly not the fastest or sharpest tablet around, and a duo of 5MP snappers isn’t exactly a lot, but the Honor Pad 8’s solid build and large size make it a unique entry-level offering.

Highly Commended: Apple iPad 10th Gen

For a while now, there’s been a fine line between the basic (and most popular) iPad and the Air and Pro lines that sit above it. Simply put, the iPad clings to the home button for dear life, while more expensive models ditched it ages ago. But that distinction no longer exists, as Apple has finally dragged its cheapest iPad into the modern era, integrating a multi-colored iPad home button that’s hard to tell apart from the iPad Air, at least at first glance. The screen tech isn’t quite as good as the 2020 Air, but the iPad has the same A14 Bionic chip as that tablet, which is very capable, now charges via USB-C, and even gets its own Magic Keyboard. In some ways, it is superior to the iPad Pro. The basic iPad has never felt so sophisticated.
