WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Families turn 2nd when Storytime Village hands out free tablets donated by NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.

Storytime Village is commonly known as a gift to encourage reading.

Parents and children began lining up at 9 a.m. Saturday to pick up one of the free tablets for qualifying families. It comes preloaded with resources and activities.

Prisca Barnes, founder and CEO of Storytime Village, said: “Digital capital is so important. There are so many kids who might go to a fast food restaurant or something like that to do their homework, and we don’t want to see that. Now the internet is the way to access everything. and we want to close the gap and then make sure kids have resources and we really want to make sure they have literary resources.

The devices are from Moolah Wireless, which provides one year of internet service.

Families that qualified for these devices were those with incomes below federal poverty guidelines or receiving benefits such as EBT, SNAP, Medicaid, Free Lunch programs, or Pell grants.

“We see some joy in the faces of the parents and children and we know it makes a difference in their lives,” Barnes said.

Shaq was in Wichita in September for the Kansas Literacy Festival’s Hoops for Literacy event. This donation was made possible thanks to his appeal to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy. Deputy Vince Folston was there to help with distribution.

Deputy Vince Folston said: “At half-time I came out [Shaq] and spoke to him. I’m like, ‘Man, I’m sorry I missed that dunk. I’ll get it back in the second half.’

Before the start of the second half, MP Folston called Shaq and told him that if MP Folston dunked, he would buy a tablet and shoes. Deputy Folston made this dunk.

“The children came to hug me and say ‘thank you,'” he said. “I think Shaq bought the computers, but it was great to have that kind of pressure on me to dunk.”

If families register on Saturday but do not receive their tablets, a tablet will be sent to them.

Next month they will be giving away shoes. Shaq will ship 1,000 pairs.
