Samsung has revealed that it will be launching a range of MicroLED TVs in South Africa next year in sizes between 76 and 126 inches.

The company’s director of consumer electronics in South Africa, Michael van Lier, said the prices of Samsung MicroLED TVs will range from R1.5 million to R3 million.

“I am proud to say that they will be the most expensive televisions. “They range from R1.5 million and R3 million depending on their size,” said Van Lier.

“It’s for very high-end customers who want the right experience, for example, in their home cinema.”

He added that Samsung will launch its MicroLED TV series with a “cinema” partner. However, Van Lier said he could not give further details about the relationship.

Samsung says the TVs use sapphire to help light the back of their displays, with LEDs mounted on individual display modules.

It adds that its MicroLED TVs have 24.9 million small LEDs – three times that of a standard UHD LED TV – as each MicroLED unit displays LEDs of three primary colors.

“You have a red LED, a green LED, and a blue LED in each MicroLED unit,” it said.

It also features low HDR, which Samsung says offers up to 64 levels of brightness higher than conventional displays with a 10-bit process.

According to Samsung’s statement, its MicroLED TVs will be available in 76, 89, 101, 144, and 126-inch variants.

However, it has stated that it will focus more on screen sizes above 100 inches in South Africa.

Samsung’s existing MicroLED displays include “The Wall”, which was unveiled during CES 2018.

In terms of features, Samsung describes its MicroLED TV range as “born to be unmatched”, with models offering “arena sound”, monolith design, and multi-view capabilities.

It said “arena sound” provides a front-end audio experience comparable to the sound of a concert hall, while its monolith design and “art house” features combine to provide “boundless aesthetics”.

Arena Sound includes object tracking and Dolby Atmos and is compatible with Samsung sound bars.

Gamers may find the multi-view feature attractive as Samsung said the display can be split into four separate screens.

With four HDMI inputs, the multi-view feature allows users to connect up to four gaming consoles at any time, with each interface displayed in its own quadrant of the screen.

MicroLED TVs include Samsung’s TV Smart Hub, which allows users to access apps without additional peripheral devices.

Regarding the refresh rate of the display, Samsung said that it cannot guarantee the highest refresh rate yet, but a product expert told MyBroadband that it will be capable of more than 100Hz.

He indicated that the maximum refresh rate could be as high as 144Hz, as Samsung already offers TVs with refresh rates up to 144Hz.

Van Lier said that Samsung will launch a full range of QD OLED-technology TVs next year.

“We will be launching a full range of QD OLED TV technology. This means that we will have all kinds of technology in existing TVs,” said Van Lier.

He explained that the QD OLED TVs will come in just below the Neo QLED TV range.
