Whether the German men’s soccer team will make it to the knockout round of the World Cup will depend on the next two games. But some social media users are focusing on the past and pretending it never happened.

Germany’s players covered their mouths for a photo before their first World Cup match to protest plans by FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, to punish players who wearing “One Love” armbands during the games. The restrictions are a response to the human rights record of Qatar, the host nation of the World Cup.
The plane – the one pictured in the Instagram post – was also considered a political message. Lufthansa is the official airline of the men’s team, but on November 13, it posted on its website that only the team’s players, coaches and support staff will be at their training camp in Oman the following day recently.
The team flew on a regional plane from Oman to Qatar a few days later. The World Cup started on November 20.
The German group said in a statement that it had decided that the airline should not take the Lufthansa flight to Qatar because it would be empty when it returned from Doha. The decision was based on environmental sustainability, the group said.
The image of the Instagram post shows the team before boarding the plane in Frankfurt on November 14. Qatar does not express its refusal to accept the plane , and the ability to return to Oman.
