West Bank funeral
Palestinians in the West Bank mourn the latest victim of Israeli gunfire. 18-year-old Musab Nafa was killed near Ramallah during an Israeli raid. He was one of two Palestinians shot by Israeli forces. A second person was injured and is now in Israeli custody. Israel has led a deadly crackdown on the West Bank recently. So far this year, the violence has killed more than 140 Palestinians. The opposition group Hamas says the Palestinian people will never rest until they avenge the killings. It says the blood of Palestinians will be a “curse” that plagues Israeli occupation throughout Palestine.
UN Climate Summit
The UN climate conference, COP-27, opens in Egypt, amid growing calls for rich countries to compensate poor countries at risk of climate change. Delegates from about 200 countries took part in the event in Sharm el-Sheikh. This year, the conference will focus on four key climate issues: mitigation, adaptation, finance and cooperation. Last month, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the world was facing a crisis, after a UN report warned of global warming of 2.8 degrees Celsius by the end of the 21st century. Campaigners say not enough progress has been made since the COP-26 summit in Scotland last year. That conference led to the Glasgow Agreement, which committed signatory countries to reduce carbon emissions. This year’s conference will take place on November 18.
The Russian-Ukrainian War
Reports from the Russian-held Kherson region say the planned Kakhovka dam has been hit by a Ukrainian strike. Russian media said the rocket, launched by the US-made HIMRAS missile system, hit the dam’s lock and caused damage. They said a total of six rockets were fired at the dam, but Russian air defense units called off the main strike. The Kakhovka dam was captured by Russian forces in the early days of the war. Meanwhile, the authorities involved in Russia’s volatile region say that many settlements, including the city of Kherson, have lost water and electricity “in an act of destruction.” Three power lines in the area were damaged in the attack. Kherson officials blamed Ukraine for the attack. No response from Kiev so far.
