Sixteen of Wales’ brightest young pupils and students have won gold in the UK’s biggest skills competition after months of intensive training (full winners’ table below).
They graduated in a wide range of subjects from plumbing to aircraft maintenance and 3D digital game technology WorldSkills UK National Finals.
Designed by industry experts, the competition helps young people grow personally and professionally by developing their technical and employability skills, and shines a light on the amazing talent in the UK.
A victory in the national final means the winners they now have the opportunity to compete in the “international skills olympics” in France in 2024. Team UK for the prestigious international tournament will be announced early next year.
Airbus Maintenance winner Rosie Boddy is from Farnborough and is 20 years old. He works for Airbus UK in Broughton. He said: “I was watching the award ceremony at home and I couldn’t believe it when my name was announced. I wanted to take part so I could compete with the best in the UK and see how I did. I can’t believe I’ve come out on top and I’m excited to see the opportunity to compete in the WorldSkills UK final.”
Pipes that won gold Ruben Duggan at Blackwood studying at Coleg Y Cymoedd has 20 he said:I couldn’t believe it when Steph McGovern learned I had won gold at the UK National Championships. It was a difficult moment for me. I put hundreds of hours into training and it was hard work, however it was all worth it. “
Ryan Williams from Pentwyn is studying at Coleg Gwent and is 18 years old. “It’s amazing to get this reward after investing so much time and effort. A big thank you goes to my tutors as I could not have done this without their amazing help and support. “
More than 500 students and apprentices took part in the finals of more than 60 courses held in seven locations across the UK earlier this month. I A full list of winners is available Right here.
The finalists underwent a seven-month regional warm-up and intensive training program before competing in the finals. They learned of their victory during a special live program from the Channel 4 Lunchtime studios, presented by Steph McGovern.
Steph McGovern said: “Sixteen gold medals from Wales – just brilliant. We need to make sure that their amazing success inspires others to follow in their footsteps. Skills have the power to transform lives and economies. This competition shows how the UK is full of brilliant young people doing great things. “
Deputy CEO of WorldSkills UK, Ben Blackledge said: “What a game. Being crowned the best in the UK is no mean feat, especially with all the hurdles and difficulties competitors have had to overcome in recent years.
“Everyone who put themselves forward in this year’s WorldSkills UK competition is a real inspiration and should be proud of their efforts. Skills are key to every economy, creating high-quality, rewarding jobs, inward investment and growth. “
WorldSkills UK focuses on selecting and training young people to represent the UK in international competitions. A unique insight into the global best practice that gathers at those events is shared with young people and educators to help develop and deliver the skills needed to bring high quality training and jobs to many parts of the UK.
The competition is popular with participants, who help develop their professional and personal skills:
- 97% of former participants said they improved their technical skills
- 93% said they improved their personal and employability skills
- 90% said they could use the skills they developed.
