The Department of Health has recalled paracetamol, a popular drug used to treat pain and fever.
The Department of Health issued a general directive to the management of all regional medical supply kits to quarantine or isolate substandard batches of paracetamol 500 mg tablets.
The directive was issued by Health Minister Dr Osborne Liko last week and also covers health center kits and aid post distributors.
Pursuant to Circular No. 54 dated November 2, 2022, all four 100% medical device distributors are ordered to immediately stop distributing medical center kits and aid posts to medical centers and to quarantine or isolate these medical devices.
The department’s pharmaceutical inspectors will conduct a quality audit of discolored Paracetamol 500mg tablets in health center kits and aid post kits, which are currently being distributed to health facilities across the country.
According to Mr Liko, the discoloration or damage to the Paracetamol 500mg batches was caused by the distribution of the current medical supply kit; and several health facilities in Mamose, mountainous and southern regions of the country.
He said investigations have begun and pharmaceutical inspectors will visit warehouses or premises to inspect and collect relevant information to confirm the cause of discoloration or spoilage of the respective batches of 500mg Paracetamol tablets produced by North China Pharmaceutical Company Limited. batch numbers 201240, 201241, 201242 and 201243.
