Normal People star Paul Mescal said it would ‘blight the day’ he decided to quit social media but he doesn’t think it’s ‘beneficial for people’.
The actor, 26, who became famous as Connell Waldron, decided to delete his accounts in 2021 after he found fame overnight.
He told the Guardian: ‘I don’t think there’s anything very nice for a man to see, like you,’ as he made a box with his hands and scratched his face.
It’s true: Normal People star Paul Mescal has said he’s ‘grieving the day’ he decided to quit social media but he doesn’t think it’s ‘beneficial for people’
Paul continued: ‘I thought I should get off the bus now or stay on it, and I wanted to get off. In 10 years I’ll regret the day I threw away my social media, but look, it’s what it is.’
It is not known exactly when Paul, who has more than 1 million followers, deleted his account but his profile on Instagram disappeared in April 2021.
A source told The Sun at the time: ‘Paul deleted his Instagram account because he had just received a torrent. He thought it was a waste of time there, reading such content was not good for one’s mental health.
‘He has more things going on in his life and he wants to focus his energy on his personal life and work, he doesn’t need social media for that. He’s a private person and doesn’t want to share everything online.’
The source said that Paul doesn’t think it’s ‘worth it’ to pay on ‘money offers’ from brands that say he can afford a six-year salary.

They added that the Irish actor may resume his Instagram later but is ‘enjoying’ his break.
In December, Paul talked about the stresses of social media in a candid interview with Glamor after his account grew from 1,000 to more than 100,000 followers.
He said: ‘It’s an amazing privilege to have a place like that at night. It went from 1,000 followers to a couple of 100 thousand. It’s amazing.
‘My biggest joy on that is that it comes from people who saw Normal People and really connected with it. But it’s also important to acknowledge that I think we’re living in an age where we can do that.
‘As time went on this year, I learned a lot about wanting to get away from those things. No one will remember your Instagram following. It will not be written on your tombstone.’
Love-up: The Irish actor has been in a relationship with singer Phoebe Bridgers for two years
Irish actress and singer Phoebe Bridgers has been dating for over two years.
The couple first linked up in 2020 before making their red carpet debut at the LACMA Art+Film Gala in November and then taking over Instagram in December.
In May of this year, there were rumors of a wedding at the California music festival, when they joined the guests at a party during the second week of the festival.
A partygoer is quoted as saying that Phoebe made no secret of the fact that the two couples walked down the aisle but The Sun reports that she was not seen wearing a ring engaged.
Paul was also spotted hanging out with girlfriend Daisy Edgar-Jones at the US festival, with the pair growing close after starring in the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s book Normal People.
Wedding: In May this year, the couple sparked rumors of a wedding at the California music festival, when they joined guests at a party during the second week of the festival.
It comes just months after the couple took to Instagram for a sweet snap on social media.
The Kyoto-based singer, 27, took to the photo-sharing app in December to confirm their relationship and how the two looked very much in love.
Although this is the first time the couple has made their public debut, the pair walked the red carpet at the LACMA Art+Film Gala last month.
They were also spotted on the perfect walk in Los Angeles.
The two have become close to each other after a source revealed that they spent a week together in August 2020.
The insider said: ‘Paul invited friends over and they played wild drinking games. They have been beaten. Her posting on the popular dating website Raya is a smokescreen to hide the fact that they are secretive.’
Performer: Phoebe performed as a special guest at the Gobi Tent during the second weekend of Coachella last week
Paul has previously spoken about his love, telling GQ magazine: ‘Having someone to lean on in that crazy, crazy time is so important. Of course, I don’t know where I would be without him.’
Meanwhile, the indie rock star told NME magazine in May that she thought Paul was a ‘lovely boy’ after falling for him after watching Normal People.
He continued to follow her on Instagram, and the actor responded quickly.
‘I got a pitter-patter in my heart when I saw it’, he gushed.
The two soon met, when the actor joined Phoebe for a vodcast on his Instagram Live.
During their Instagram Live, Paul also admitted: ‘I think it’s good to write that I love your music.’
Phoebe replied: ‘Well, I’m embarrassed.’
Paul sat down with the singer on Zoom after the Live, where they drank together for a few hours.
