Twitter is changing rapidly under its new owner Elon Musk. On Thursday evening, news that the social media platform was on the verge of collapse prompted users to write goodbye in case they lost things.

The app is still hanging, but users are still struggling to find alternative ways to communicate. The hashtags #TwitterOFF, #Twittershutdown, and #TwitterMigration are trending across the United States and Google searches for other platforms, like Mastadon, are on the rise.

Here’s a list of places to go — online and in person — instead of Twitter.

Young people are becoming more and more dependent on social media platforms but Twitter. In fact, a Pew study says that most young Americans don’t use Twitter at all. Instead, their time is growing on BeReal, Instagram, and TikTok.

In Philadelphia, local Instagram and TikTok accounts are being run to cater to various interests. From public art legends like @phillypublicart to local rapper 2rare, there’s a little something for everyone.

It’s impossible to make a comprehensive list, but here are some Philly ones accounts to get you started:

On Instagram

On TikTok

  • @elijahhh47: a local educator and editor with many followers

  • @2rare: Philadelphia rapper got famous on the app

Reddit is a popular network that functions as a message board forum. Users can subscribe and participate in sub-groups. Each sub-channel has its own moderators to manage. Moderators act as moderators, who can set the rules and who gets in and who gets kicked out of the group. It can be upvoted or downvoted (like thumbs-down on Twitter).

The Philadelphia hashtag, r/Philadelphia, has over 434,000 subscribers. A place to post links, talk about homes, and ask for advice. The platform has thousands of subreddits that users can join based on their interests. For example, Eagles fans have their own sub-section with 237,000 followers. 76ers, Phillies, Flyers, and Union fans also have dedicated discounts.

Discord and Mastodon are platforms that allow users to communicate with each other. Discord can be compared to Slack or Microsoft Teams. Users can exchange voice messages, texts, calls, and files. Instead, Mastodon is described as an open source app that’s like “a less toxic Twitter.” It looks like it works like an email account. You select your server when you sign up and you can chat and interact with others as you wish.

The internet can be a great place to connect and meet new people. But it can also be a dark, toxic waste event. A popular meme on Twitter is people telling each other to “hit the grass,” suggesting they spend too much time online. According to Know Your Meme, the phrase has become increasingly popular throughout 2021. But you don’t have to take this word for granted. Any time outside can help fight all that blue light. Among the comments of Twitter in death, users joked about finding peace and happiness without being attached to the app. So maybe… get out?

Phones are prohibited at the Hop Sing Laundromat, cash-only Chinatown cocktail bar. There is no internet and it is better that you don’t even think about taking selfies. Hop Sing opened in 2012, and its strong policies have garnered national attention. House rules are no phones, no shoes, boots or shorts. Going to the movies or the theater will get you closer to the phone-free zone.

Swap your typing hands for a craft like pottery or candle making. Throughout the Philadelphia area, classes are offered in art, physical arts, arts and crafts, and cooking. With the new year just around the corner, now is probably the perfect time to get something new – maybe a glass blower?

Remember: if you miss tweeting, you can try your hand at birdwatching.
