Getting locked out of a social media account is common.

On the Meta Platforms, billions of users log in every day. Meta said it is working hard to build its customer service in the coming years. It often leads users who have problems with navigation tools.

However, a new report by the Wall Street Journal says that in some cases hackers have changed email addresses, people have lost access to certain accounts, and they no longer know their passwords.

If it’s free, there are a number of features that can help, including incorporating some basic privacy practices.

Turn on two-factor authentication

Adding another layer of security makes it more difficult for attackers to remove it.

Agents like Okta Verification and security keys can prevent bad actors.

On Facebook, go to “Security and Login Settings” and scroll to “Use two-factor authentication.”

Click “Edit” and choose the security method you want to add, including the text message code from your mobile phone.

On the Instagram app for Android and iPhone, go to your profile and tap the three horizontal bars in the upper right.

Find “Settings” and tap on “Security.”

Under “Two-factor authentication” hit “Start” and choose the security method you want to add.

There are also instructions for the Instagram website from a mobile and computer browser.

Use a Password manager

A password manager can help keep even the most difficult passwords in check.

However, do not reuse passwords and try to keep them to 12 characters or longer.

Check the email about the account

Check to see what email addresses Facebook or Instagram remembers.

Another email address makes it easier to log back into an account.

To add or remove an email address on Facebook, go to Settings and click “Contacts” in the “General” tab.

On Instagram, go to your profile, tap the three bars and click Settings.

Scroll down to login and click “Add Account.”

“You can log in to one Instagram account at a time, but your device can store login information for multiple Instagram accounts. You can add or remove information log in from your Instagram app settings,” says the app’s help center.

Removing login information will temporarily disable or permanently delete the account.
