The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, said that Instagram will start testing the full screen design of its main feed.
If you blinked you might have missed Zuckerberg’s announcement, because it was made via Instagram.
Here are some photos showing a before (top) and back (bottom) comparison of the new design:
This will make Instagram look more like a TikTok clone, with content reaching the length of the screen.
A small area at the bottom is reserved for navigation, while other elements are overlaid on top of the content.
To address the concerns about the new design, Zuckerberg followed by explaining that photos will continue to be an important part of Instagram.
The new design doesn’t turn Instagram into just a video.

“We want to make it easier to find information and connect with your friends.
Photos are still an important part of Instagram, and we’re working on ways to improve how they appear in the full-screen feed.
Some people begin to see this test.
We came to hear your feedback.”
It will be interesting to see how this works, as Instagram photos are not rendered in all screen sizes.
To eliminate this, the app cuts off the edges of the photo, which may result in loss of information.
Zuckerberg’s commitment to maintaining the photo-sharing experience on Instagram is in contrast to what Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s CEO, has been saying for the past year.
In July 2021, Mosseri went so far as to say: ‘we are not a photo sharing app.’
At the end of January, Mosseri revealed his plans for Instagram this year, saying that videos and messages will be the main focus.
Although photos will continue to be part of the new Instagram feed, it is clear that this is not considered a growth area for the company.
Video, especially short video, is the growth driver right now. Even though Facebook is shifting its focus to video, it’s a pivot that came as the stock plunged in February.
Recently, an internal memo leaked to Facebook employees announced plans to overhaul the feed around video.
There is no guarantee that investment in video will pay off. It has a lot of potential to drive away loyal users and attract new ones.
It’s a risk, be sure to understand. It looks like we’ll be getting new Instagram and Facebook feeds before the end of the year, so be prepared for the changes.
