The debate between what is and what is not a photograph continues after Sydney-based photographer Demas Rusli presented his before and after photographs of surrealist paintings. In a video on TikTok, Rusli lets his followers hide; He achieves his real photos by editing. It’s no real surprise though that one of his photos is of a road running vertically…
Surrealist paintings challenge reality by exploring concepts of the world, changing perspectives and filling them with contradictions. Born out of World War I, surrealism was a new challenge for photographers who had to find ways to create dreamy scenes from real life situations. This new approach to photography is not only a highly creative mind but also an understanding of different techniques such as double exposure, portrait photography, and sunlight exposure (opens in a new tab).

Early pioneers of the surrealist movement were photographers such as Man Ray, Florence Henri and Claude Cahun who explored themes of gender and equality in both collages and still life. Today surrealism is a popular style of photography but the digital world has made it even more achievable.

Photographers like Demas Rusli have photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop CC (opens in a new tab) which creates mind-bending images that are not only simple but also very believable. I often see posts on my Instagram feed and I have to stop wondering how true they are but if I like the look, I don’t care. I don’t doubt that every photo is worth looking at, whether it’s a retouched photo or an amazing photo collage.
Even if the photo is true to life it will not lose its final image. Any image that can trigger a reaction, or make someone question their own concept of reality, is a powerful image. Surrealist photography is an art form, not a literary form and as such, opens up a whole world of editing possibilities. The ability to manipulate an image in a way that has no limits is a plus, a method, a new addition to photo editing.
If you have the skill and patience to edit people out of photos and create an Instagram-worthy photo I’d say go for it – maybe not what came out of the camera but it’s yours. Should people explain when they’ve edited a photo to fit their vision? No – unless it’s giving people unrealistic expectations such as body modification and body modification.
I was also confused by the edits, I’ve seen Rusli’s photo of the plane flying over the apartment blocks before and wondered how he got that shot but that’s not part of beauty? A secret is something we value, and sometimes the best kept secrets are best kept – no matter how amazing it is to see the before and after.
