PARIS: Smile, don’t lie, you’re on camera. Instagram has launched a new way to find out the age of its users with video selfies.

Developed in collaboration with Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification, the technology determines a user’s age based on their facial expressions.

Although this new form of moderation is aimed, in particular, at seeing small users, the foundation wants to reassure users that their privacy will be respected in the process.

The personal videos taken will not be kept by the social network, which says that the content will be deleted within 30 days after the analysis.

The same goes for knowing your identity, which is not possible with this system, says Instagram.

The company continues: “Instagram doesn’t use facial recognition, and we don’t use it in video selfies. We use video selfies to make sure you’re a real person, and confirm it with a review. and the person you have authorized to access your account.”

Although users can provide some kind of ID to show their age, for Instagram, the video selfie method helps prevent the use of fake documents: “Selfies help prevent IDs forgery and other illegal activities.”

The number verification process also promises to be faster with a video selfie than an ID submission.
