  • Thanks to a bug in the Instagram app update, your direct messages appear black.
  • Update your Instagram app to a newer version to see if that fixes the problem.
  • If the problem persists, you may be able to turn on the dark mode of your phone to get rid of the black messages.

It’s not uncommon for problems to pop up from time to time in mobile apps, and Instagram seems to have its own bug because of the latest update. Many users have reported that some or all of their messages have been “blacked out,” causing a black box to appear in the app.

Obviously, this makes the ads unreadable, a very unfortunate development. If you are having trouble with this development, there is good news: It is very easy to fix it yourself.

How to fix blacked out Instagram messages

Since this problem appeared because of the latest update to the Instagram app, the permanent solution is to update to the latest version of Instagram, because a new version of the app will fix the problem.

Normally, your phone should install updates when they are available, but you can force an update if it is available but not yet installed on your phone. Here’s how to update an app on your iPhone or Android phone.

If there is no update or the latest update did not solve your problem, there is another very simple way to get rid of black messages: Just turn on dark mode on your phone.

If you have an iPhone, start the Identification app and type Display and View. Tap sadthen go back to Instagram to read your messages.

On Android, the way to enable dark mode varies depending on the OS and handset you have, but for most phones you can start Identification app and tap Display. In the Appearance section, switch Dark theme by swiping the button to the right. You should see messages on Instagram.
