Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal has accused National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds of recommending many people for firearms user licenses (FULs). Hinds denied the allegation.

During Wednesday’s session of the Joint Selection Committee for National Security, addressing the

factors that contribute to the prevalence of illegal firearms and gun violence, Moonilal asked Hinds if he agreed that prime ministers and government ministers should not advise private citizens for the FUL.

“The former police commissioner said that very high-ranking officials, including Fitzgerald Hinds and myself, have asked or advised people to get a FUL. You will accept a change that PMs, MPs and government ministers do not do they advise private citizens for FULs?”

Hinds said and repeated that he did not recall recommending anyone for a FUL.

“I want the record to read that I have not recommended anyone for a firearms user’s license.”

Moonilal later sent pictures to the media of a WhatsApp conversation, allegedly between former police commissioner Gary Griffith and Hinds. The first message read,

“Commissioner, I have a couple of FUL applications for my soldier security detail. There is no objection from their mandate and the TTDF. I have been looking at them now for two years and I am satisfied that they are fit and worthy. Also rotate with the details of the CJ. Please give your most favorable consideration. I will send them directly to you.”

The answer was “Yes, just WhatsApp me full name with reference number”.

Several other messages followed in which Hinds allegedly followed in these applications.

When the messages were forwarded to Griffith for comment, he said Hinds, the PM, and the current police commissioner were hypocritical in their stance on FULs.

“These three people give the impression that recommending people to have firearms or law-abiding citizens who purchase firearms is the worst, but these three individuals cannot, however, claim that they were not instrumental or a part of trying to help many people.in the purchase of firearms.

“I don’t have a problem with that, because it’s your right to recommend people to the police commissioner or whoever, and then you do the due diligence to check if people are eligible, entitled, and of sound mind. mind to acquire.”

Asked if the photos were of his conversations with Hinds, Griffith said, “No comment.”
