Dwyane Wade on Thursday fired back in a social media post against his ex-girlfriend, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, who filed a petition this week challenging the star’s August court order Former NBA star to change their transgender daughter’s name and gender.

Funches-Wade’s counterclaim, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles County court, asks that their 15-year-old daughter, Zaya, “make this important decision for them” and he turns 18, the “age of majority.” He also claims that Wade “benefits” from Zaya’s name and gender reassignment and contracts and marketing opportunities through companies such as Disney and “is encouraging or encouraging the youngest child to have a financial opportunity.”

“This is a terrible and terrible accusation that happened to our children,” Wade responded in a statement posted on his Instagram. “While none of us are surprised that Siohvaughn is trying to fight Zaya’s identity and trying so hard to drag my name through the mud, I am very disappointed that she still finds ways to focus on her and her needs, without thinking about her children.”

Representatives for Wade did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Wade and Funches-Wade, who were married from 2002 to 2010, have two children: Zaya and 20-year-old son Zaire Wade.

Dwyane Wade married actress Gabrielle Union in 2014. In recent years, the couple has been open about their support for Zaya’s gender identity.

“We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community, and we are proud friends,” Wade said during an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2020. We can arrange to give We give our child the best opportunity to be the best.”

A hearing to decide the case regarding Zaya’s legal name and gender reassignment is scheduled for December 12.
