NEEDHAM, Mass., October 31, 2022 – Worldwide tablet shipments fell 8.8% year-over-year to a total of 38.6 million units in the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker created. This was the fifth quarter of a decline in the tablet market. Chromebook shipments also struggled in 3Q22, falling to 4.3 million units and 34.4% year-over-year. Both markets have shifted from supply-constrained to demand-driven industries as consumption and education spending have slowed amid economic uncertainty.

Chinese retailers continue to do well in emerging markets with low demand. Many vendor sanctions have also allowed Chinese vendors such as Huawei to do well in the Russian market. At the same time, the emergence of low-cost Chinese OEMs such as Realme, Xiaomi, Oppo and others has fueled intense competition in the low-end devices. However, these gains still haven’t made up for the decline experienced by major tablet vendors.

“After massive growth in 2020 and 2021, the tablet market is expected to decline in 2022. Now the market is experiencing not only a slowdown in demand, but also some strong macroeconomic headwinds. But the majority of tablets (Android) and Chromebooks Anuroopa Nataraj, IDC’s senior research analyst for mobility and consumer device monitoring. “However, tablets have found many more use cases post-pandemic, from their role in the workplace to in-person and remote learning, entertainment, and even digital transformation across multiple verticals.”

“Chromebooks face a number of challenges in the industry, not all of which are due to platform limitations,” he said.Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers. “We believe that Chromebooks will continue to play a key role in personal computing and ultimately grow relative to other platforms. But as the industry adapts to the new environment we live in, growth will continue to slow. We’ve seen many major PC brands prioritize opportunities in the Windows PC space, and their without support, the Chrome market will move slowly.”
