The Yamaguchi Prefectural Board of Education has apologized for missing school after a junior high school student overheard teachers discussing students in the staff room. The conversation was accidentally recorded on a reading tablet.

On Thursday, the Iwakuni City Board of Education apologized for the incident.

The board explained that a teacher at a public junior high school in the city noticed after school on October 31 that several students had forgotten to take their study tablets home. The teacher decided to leave the tablets overnight on the desk in the teachers’ room.

The teacher did not realize that the audio recording function was turned on on one of the tablets. The tablet recorded conversations between teachers without anyone knowing.

The next day, the teacher returned this tablet and everything else to the students.

The student who accidentally recorded the tablet realized that the teachers were talking about student guidance and other personal information or feelings about specific students.

The student sent the audio recording to a number of classmates.

The Department of Education said one of the students, who knew what the teachers were talking about, had been absent from school since the beginning of this month.

None of the teachers who participated in the recorded conversation could not come to work.
Elementary school staff visited the homes of all students who shared the audio or were named in the recording to apologize. The school has since deleted the recording.

Moriyama Toshiharu, a spokesman for the Iwakuni City Board of Education, said at a press conference on Thursday that such random writing could happen at any school. He said that efforts will be intensified so that teachers understand the proper use of teaching tablets.
