Smartphone companies and industry bodies have agreed to introduce a single charging port for all electronic devices in a phased manner, the Consumer Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.

A small group will be formed to examine the feasibility of creating unified charging ports for wearables, he said. This was decided during a discussion at an inter-ministerial working group meeting chaired by Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh.

The meeting was attended by representatives of industry associations like MAIT, FICCI, CII, educational institutions including IIT Kanpur, IIT (BHU), Varanasi and also central government ministries including Ministry of Environment.

“Stakeholders have agreed that a phased rollout of the common charging port can be carried out for industry use and harmonious acceptance by consumers,” an official statement said.

At the meeting, there was a broad consensus among stakeholders to adopt USB Type-C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Additionally, it was noted that a different charging port could be adopted for feature phones.

“The industry needs to overcome inertia in adopting a single charging port for the benefit of consumers and to avoid avoidable e-waste,” the secretary said at the meeting.

The Department of Consumer Affairs has also decided to set up a sub-group to examine the feasibility of a unified charging port for wearables. The small group includes representatives of industry bodies and educational institutions.

It has also been said that an impact study may be conducted by the Ministry of Environment to assess and investigate the possible impact of single charging ports on electronic devices in relation to e-waste.

The uniformity of charging ports is a step towards the LiFE (Lifestyle for the Environment) mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP-26, which calls on people around the world to “use wisely and deliberately” instead of “sensibly and wastefully”.

LiFE’s mission is to create and nurture a global network of “Pro-Planet People” (P3) people who have a shared commitment to adopt and promote an eco-friendly lifestyle.
