The combination of hunting down to avoid the cold weather and the impossible-to-avoid holiday electronics sales means that now is the perfect time to buy something new to look at in your home: that is, a television or computer monitor. As you look for products in stores and online, you’ll see many household name brands and a few unknown ones. How do you decide between them?
For any specific model of TV or monitor, you can look at PCMag reviews to provide important function, feature, and price recommendations for each product. But to find out which brands consistently deliver the best experience, we looked to you. We asked you to tell us about your experience with the displays you use, whether you bought them recently or have had them for a few years. We also want to know how you feel about the companies that make them. Read on to find out which brands receive the highest scores from PCMag’s reading.
2022 televisions
Sony has consistently been among the top brands in terms of customer satisfaction in our surveys and, once again, the company won a Readers’ Choice award for television. For the past several years, we’ve given out two awards in this category: one for all TVs and one for 4K TVs. Sony won our 4K award from 2019 to 2021, and also won our overall award in 2019 and 2021. By 2022, we’re at a point where the majority of new TVs support 4K (including 89% of TVs purchased in our last TV. six months), so we’ve combined those two categories – and Sony’s our winner.
Survey respondents answered several questions related to satisfaction, and Sony came out on top in many of them, including what we consider the two most important: overall satisfaction (8.9) and likelihood of recommending (9.0). Respondents were asked to rate satisfaction on a scale from 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied). LG and Samsung finish just behind Sony in these measurements – both have an overall satisfaction rating of 8.8, and LG’s perhaps-admirable rating is 8.9, while Samsung’s is 8.8.
Sony and LG tied for the highest scores in several dimensions, including satisfaction with picture quality (9.3), reliability (9.2), and sound quality (7.9). Satisfaction with sound quality is only asked of respondents who use their TV’s built-in speakers; 46% of respondents told us that’s how they listen.
Note that Sony represents the high end of the TV market. It has the lowest satisfaction-with-price rating of any brand (8.3). Cheaper TCL TVs get the highest satisfaction score on this scale (9.3), a full point ahead of Sony. And Hisense (9.1) tops at 9.0 in cost satisfaction. The two companies also have the best satisfaction ratings for smart TV capabilities, with TCL getting 8.7 and Hisense 8.5. Both companies make models that use Roku, Google, and Android TV, so you can choose one that suits your preferences. TCL, which received Readers Choice Awards from 2018 to 2020, also comes out on top for ease of use (8.9), but has very low satisfaction scores for sound (7.6) and HDR (8.4; tied with Vizio) .
2022 Computer Monitors
Regardless of brand, survey respondents tend to look best at their computer monitors. This year, as last, in the overall satisfaction rating, only half a point separates Samsung (9.2), the top driver, from HP (8.7), which has a low rating. But we still see a clear difference between the best brands and the laggards.
Samsung won our Readers’ Choice award this year. The company is a regular winner, winning our award in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2020. Samsung gets a satisfaction rating of 9.0 or higher in almost every measure. Its highest rating is for reliability satisfaction (9.5), and it gets 9.2 for image quality satisfaction and ease of use satisfaction, and 9.1 for praise and 9.0 for setup satisfaction. The only measure where Samsung falls below 9.0 is satisfaction with cost (8.7). With the exception of Acer, which has a high satisfaction-price ratio (9.0), all brands land between 8.6 and 8.8 in this list.
Asus was the winner for the past two years, but overall satisfaction dropped from 9.1 in 2021 to 8.8 this year, putting it in the middle of the pack. The company’s simple utility rating fell sharply, from 9.1 last year to 8.6, a surprisingly low rating for this measure.
About one-third of survey respondents (34%) said they use ultrawide monitors. As the name suggests, ultrawides display more screen space than standard screens of the same size category and can provide a valuable alternative or support dual display environment for production workers, designers, and gamers. Dell won our first Readers’ Choice Award for ultrawide displays. Along with Dell, LG and Samsung received enough ultrawide display responses to be ranked here, and they all scored high on our satisfaction measures. Dell has the highest overall satisfaction rating (9.3), with LG and Samsung behind at 9.2.
Apart from satisfaction with the cost, between 8.6 and 8.7, the ratings of three companies are 9.0 or better in every measure – but Dell has the highest score. Its highest rating is satisfaction with picture quality (9.4) and reliability (9.4, tied by LG). Where Dell really separates itself from the competition, however, is in the all-important benchmark, where it scores a 9.3, beating LG’s and Samsung’s 9.0 ratings.
The PCMag Readers Choice survey for TVs and Computer Monitors was fielded from October 25 to November 14, 2022. To learn more about how we conduct the survey, read the survey methodology.
