Guwahati: On Saturday, 50 students of two schools in Charaideo district of Upper Assam fell ill after consuming iron-folic acid (IFA) tablets provided by Health Department officials.

The students were immediately taken to Sonari Civil Hospital, where they were treated and later discharged home.

According to officials, a team of health workers from Batau Sub Center under Patsaku Block Primary Health Center distributed IFA tablets to 75 students of Heranipatar Lower Primary School and 26 students of Nimalia Lower Primary School.

Tablets were distributed in the presence of teachers, and children were advised not to drink on an empty stomach.

A few hours after the pills were distributed, the medical team received information from the school authorities when two children from each school complained of vomiting and abdominal pain.

“They were immediately taken to Sonari Civil Hospital for further medical intervention. Later, another 48 children were taken to the hospital for examination,” the official said.

According to the statement of the Department of Health, the situation is being closely monitored.
