GURUGRAM: More than 15 months after sanctioning the construction of a rotary at Kanhai Chowk to smooth traffic flow, Gurugram The Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is now exploring the option of installing traffic signals at the intersection instead.
Kanhai Chowk is the T-junction of Sectors 44, 45 and 52, where traffic flows from Huda City Center Metro Station, Golf Course Road (Extension), Ambedkar Road, Sohna Road, St. Thomas Marg and Golf Course Road. The junction is located near several gated societies, malls and schools.
The tendering process for the new project is expected to take several months, with another “six to eight months” to complete, officials said. However, residents and commuters are likely to experience its benefits in the second half of 2023.
In fact, tenders for the earlier project were floated thrice – in September, October and December. Due to low participation and weak competition, the project was never awarded.
“The earlier project required relocation of 37 trees and 20 electric poles, which involved permission from the forest department as well as coordination with the South Haryana Bijli Bitran Nigam (DHBVN),” said a senior GMDA official briefed on the matter.
GMDA CEO Sudhir Rajpal has also been urging officials for the past few months to find ways to execute projects without touching the trees located in their vicinity.
With these factors in mind, GMDA officials have re-examined the project, and reworked the plan, which now involves upgrading Kanhai Chowk as a “signalized intersection”, making the project easier to execute and minimal disturbance to underground and overground utilities.
The proposal was mooted at a meeting of the GMDA’s Core Planning Cell (CPC) earlier this week, where officials disclosed that it involves re-phasing of traffic lights at the intersection, construction of proper footpaths and continuous flow of pedestrians for smooth flow of traffic. Ensure table top crossings, as well as road signs.
Rumble strips will also be provided to prevent speeding by drivers, officials said, and medians and islands will be extended to intersections. Further, proper signage including stop and warning signs shall be provided as per IRC guidelines.
