It is reported that Samsung begins production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs | Tech Reddy

Four years ago, Samsung released its first MicroLED TVs. Back then, those TVs were recommended to businesses, and consumer versions of those TVs were released a year later. A few years ago, Samsung managed to reduce the prices and sizes of MicroLED TVs.

Now reported by TheElec that Samsung has begun mass production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs, and we can expect those TVs to launch later this year or early next year. A new report also claims that Samsung is using LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) glass substrates instead of printed circuit boards to make its new MicroLED TVs. This new method is expected to reduce the pixel size and overall cost of the TV.

Samsung was expected to start mass production of 101-inch and 114-inch MicroLED TVs, but that has been delayed for unknown reasons. The South Korean company was originally expected to start production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs in May 2022, but the plan was pushed back due to supply issues and low yield rates. The upcoming MicroLED TVs from Samsung are said to use 34µm x85µm LED chips from Taiwanese firm PlayNitride.

MicroLED TVs are similar to OLED TVs in the way that each pixel emits its own light and color, but the material is not made from organic materials. So, MicroLED TVs have the picture quality of OLED and the brightness and longevity of LCD. However, with current technology, it is difficult to make 4K MicroLED TVs smaller than 89 inches, which means lower pixel density and sharpness than current LCD and OLED TVs. What’s more, they are very difficult to make, which leads to outrageous price tags.

In the future, when MicroLED technology develops enough, it is expected to replace LCD and OLED. Currently, Samsung sells MicroLED TV modules for business and integrated MicroLED TVs for consumers.
