(Pocket Lint) – Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Redmi, is the latest to join the affordable Android tablet market with the Redmi Pad. It strives to bring high quality and performance, but at an affordable price.

The tablet has a 10.61-inch display that supports a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. This means smoother, crisper animations with less stuttering when navigating the user interface.

With support for up to 1 billion colors, the display promises wide color gamut support and a typical brightness of around 400 nits. Maybe not in bright sunlight, but not bright enough indoors, in bed, or when traveling.

This screen is paired with a four-speaker system for powerful stereo sound, which is also enhanced by Dolby Atmos, helping to deliver an immersive experience while playing games or watching movies and TV shows.

There’s also a wide-angle 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front that can automatically switch to a wider view when it detects multiple people, perfect for when you need to make group video calls.

The tablet’s metal body is only 7.05mm thin, and the back of the body houses a large rectangular camera unit. As well as the front ultra-wide camera, the rear camera has an 8-megapixel sensor.

Inside the tablet is the MediaTek Helio G99 platform, so it’s not really a high-end flagship chipset. However, while Redmi envisions this as a normal media consumption and communication device, it’s not necessarily what it needs to be. Of course, the benefits also help to reduce costs.

Other features include an 8,000mAh battery, which Xiaomi bills as an “all-day” battery, and it supports 18W charging speeds.

In the end, this looks to be a very solid offering from Redmi, providing basic features for watching movies and videos while keeping the price at a level that many people can afford.

The Redmi Pad is available in Graphite Grey, Moonlight Silver and Mint Green, with prices starting at just £269 when it launches in the UK “soon”.
