GURUGRAM: The city has witnessed incessant rainfall since Saturday morning, causing minor waterlogging problems in some areas, especially in the inner roads of sectors and colonies. Traffic jams were reported from Hanuman Chowk on Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, Narsinghpur on Delhi-Gurgaon Highway, Sheetala Mata Road and parts of Old Gurugram.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated rain is expected on Sunday and Monday in most parts of Haryana, including Gurugram. In view of continued rains, Gurugram Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Ahuja held a virtual meeting with senior officials and ordered deployment of men and machinery at critical locations to avoid waterlogging.
On Saturday, minor waterlogging was reported from areas like Hanuman Chowk, Narsinghpur, Sector 15 Part II, parts of Palam Vihar, Sheetala Mata Road, parts of Sushant Lok I and Golf Course Extension Road. “Slight traffic congestion was reported from Hanuman Chowk and Narsinghpur but the situation was under control as it was Saturday and most offices were closed,” said a traffic official in Gurugram.
Gurugram received 42 mm of rain from Friday to 5.30 pm on Saturday, IMD Chandigarh data revealed. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Gurugram, predicting rain and thundershowers on Sunday. IMD Chandigarh director Manmohan Singh said rains are lashing Punjab and Haryana due to cyclonic circulation in the region. “Rains may continue till Monday after which clouds will clear and skies will clear. Temperatures are likely to drop further. Rains have improved humidity and air quality in the entire region, including Gurugram,” he said. The maximum temperature recorded on Saturday was 23 degrees Celsius, the minimum was 16 degrees.
Sustained rain helped disperse pollutants and air quality remained in the good category for the second day on Saturday with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 43. Saturday’s AQI readings were calculated from observations at three stations as displayed. The unit at Bikash Sadan station was repaired on Friday. Haryana State Pollution Control Board Regional Officer Kuldeep Singh said that the pollution monitoring device at Bikash Sadan was fixed on Friday. “We are monitoring AQI data from Vikas Sadan, and the unit has started displaying AQI from Friday evening. Our teams are keeping a close watch on markets and construction sites to ensure that no violations take place,” he said.
