A health initiative in Assam took a dramatic turn on Saturday when over fifty school children were hospitalized after consuming iron folic acid tablets in Assam’s Charaideo district.
The State Department said the situation was being monitored closely because it was a state of emergency. Health officials said the pills were taken after lunch.
At first, health officials complained to the school authorities in Charaideo district that two students from each school were vomiting and had stomach pains.
They were immediately admitted to Sonari Civil Hospital for treatment and further medical treatment.
According to the Health Minister of Assam, another 48 children were taken to the hospital after the incident.
Children who were admitted to Sonari Civil Hospital were released after completion of the report.
A health team working in front of Bato Sub-centre under Patsaku Block Primary Health Center distributed iron folate tablets to seventy five students of Lower Primary School.
The health team then redistributed the medical pills to Nimalia Lower Public School, where the pills were distributed to twenty-six students.
The Department of Health has not advised students to use IFA tablets:
Some caregivers blamed the health department for not providing adequate information on the consumption of IFA pills.
An official of the school’s management committee alleged that the health officials did not provide any information before distributing the medicine to the students.
The health department later clarified that the students were told not to take the pills on an empty stomach. Medicines were distributed in both schools in the presence of teachers, according to health officials.
The World Health Organization has identified school health services as an integral part of the health system. Referrals are services provided by health care providers to students in elementary or secondary schools.
Most countries have this system to prevent several diseases related to mental, physical and social aspects of health.
But what if health services go wrong?
An incident happened in Madhya Pradesh that made people think. In Madhya Pradesh, 30 students were vaccinated with the same syringe. The incident led to a breach of protocol, one syringe-one person-one time. As a result, the vaccinator was arrested, and the employee of the district vaccination department was temporarily suspended.
It has become indispensable to ensure that the health care team is working effectively and to carry out the correct diagnosis and treatment for students.
Serious anomalies were found at the Assam Civil Hospital in Bokahat. When operating at night, doctors use flashlights. Swahid Kamalamiri Civil Hospital has a bathroom leak from the ceiling. The 100-bed Swahid Kamala Miri Civil Hospital in Bokahat opened its doors in 2020.
Another incident showed two girls missing from a civil hospital in Nagaon. The missing children are said to have been sold to some child traffickers, said a hospital nurse. He added that his brother sold the 3-year-old baby for Rs 8,000. It is doubtful how the hospital nurse knew this information.
Surveys show that the public health expenditure in 2012-13 was INR 1539 million, which was spent on medical and public health care in various family health schemes. According to the Assam Health Profile, 29.8 percent of children under the age of five were found to be underweight. In addition, 35.7 percent of people were anemic and about 25.7 percent of people had a BMI below normal. 51 percent of people use public hospitals. Thus, it is important to strengthen the public health sector.
