The district administration, Rahigri Foundation and Gurugram Traffic Police jointly launched a trial on Tuesday to decongest and check traffic violations at Hero Honda Chowk (HCC), one of the busiest and important junctions in Delhi-Gurgaon city. Expressway.

Police said they have requested 115 private companies and export houses near HCC to relieve employees from duty so that there is no extended traffic jam during peak hours. They said this is an innovative plan to ease traffic congestion.
Birender Singh Sangwan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said on Tuesday evening that at least 15 companies had given their workers staggered relief at intervals of about 15 minutes and this helped control the extended traffic jam. “We are experimenting with a few changes and with the help of experts from Rahigri Foundation, we have started an experiment with a temporary solution for U-turns, so that passengers do not have to travel a long distance,” he said. .
The traffic police have installed spring bollards along the service lane of the Delhi-Jaipur carriageway of the highway just below the HHC flyover. Currently, commuters who want to go straight towards Narsinghpur or take a right turn towards Sector 37 occupy the right lane of the carriageway, blocking entry to the U-turn, police said.
In March, District Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav constituted a committee comprising the district administration, Rahigri Foundation and Gurugram Traffic Police to improve the traffic situation at the junction, police said.
Sangwan said after crossing Hero Honda Chowk, the first U-turn to the other side of the road was before the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza, which was 5 km away. “People who work in Behrampur Industrial Area and Begumpur Khatola are forced by design to use that U-turn — in essence, covering an extra 10 km distance — to the other side of the road where there is a lot of residential. area otherwise, they resort to wrong side driving to reach the other side,” he said.
Sarika Panda Bhat, a road safety expert and former program coordinator of the now-defunct Haryana Vision Zero campaign, said the Hero Honda chalk trial solved the problem of wrong-side driving arising from Behrampur road towards the U. Turn on HCC. “We are separating lanes by installing cones and installing traffic lights to ensure smooth flow of traffic, reducing the ever-present collision points,” he said.
Asking people to travel an extra 10 km to get to the other side of the road is unfair, said Ishan Gogoi, Senior Project Associate, Rahgiri Foundation. But such problems arise when highways pass through residential and industrial areas.
“Though there are expensive solutions for this, we are conducting a traffic trial which is a low-cost way of tackling the problem. We will enforce bans at collision points until a permanent solution is found,” he said.
According to traffic police officials, accidents occur at least three times a week at the junction due to wrong-side driving and around 20-30 fines are issued to violators of traffic rules on a weekly basis.
According to a report by Gurugram Vision Zero (GVZ), a road safety program of the district administration, 21 road accidents were recorded at Hero Honda Chowk between 2016 and 2021.
