Ambala/Kurukshetra/Yamunanagar: Result of district Assembly elections in North Haryana’s Ambala, Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar districts showed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) suffered a major blow from independent candidates, including those supported by the Congress and those who contested. The counting process began on Sunday morning and was updated on the State Election Commission’s e-dashboard till 12 noon before the site “crashed”. Where BJP suffered a big blow in Ward No. 4 of Narayanagarh area Suman Saini, wife of incumbent Kurukshetra MP Nayab Singh Saini, lost to Congress-backed Rajesh Devi Suman finished a disappointing fourth. Rajesh Devi defeated the trailing candidate Manjit Kaur by a margin of 236 votes.
Rajesh Kumar (Ward No. 1), Manjit Kaur (Ward No. 2), Pankaj Saini (Ward No. 3), Rajesh Devi (Ward No. 4), Rajat Singh (Ward No. 5), Harvinder Kaur (Ward No. 2) 6), Mukesh Kumar (Ward No. 7), Ankita (Ward No. 8), Makhan Singh (Ward No. 9), Sakshi Gaur (Ward No. 10), Karnail Singh (Ward No. 11), Gurjeet (Ward No. 12), Pinki Devi (Ward No. 13) Ward No.), Sukhinder Singh (Ward No. 14) and Deepika (Ward No. 15) were elected as Zilla Parishad members from Ambala.
Makhan Singh, a Lobana Sikh, who was elected from Ward No. 9, was earlier in the INLD and then jumped to the BJP. He recently joined AAP. Of the 17 seats in Kurukshetra, 13 went to independents. BJP won three seats and one seat went to AAP.
Kanwarpal Sisodia, son of incumbent JJP Shahabad MLA Ram Karan Kala, was elected from Ward No. 1. Others who won include Ramesh Kumar (Ward No. 2), Pinky (Ward No. 3), Sukhwinder Kaur (Ward No. 4), Sukhwinder Singh (Ward No. 5), Ravinder Kaur (Ward No. 6), Jasbir Panjeta ( Ward No. 7), Dimple (Ward No. 8), Rajinder Singh (Ward No. 9), Kusum Lata (Ward No. Ward) No. 10 Dharampal Chowdhury (Ward No. 11), Suresh Kumar (Ward No. 12), Rekha Devi (Ward No. 13) Ward), Sachin Kumar (Ward No. 14), Kanwaljit Kaur (Ward No. 15), Poonam Devi (Ward No. 16) and Amrik Singh (Ward No. 17). In Yamunanagar, out of 18 seats, the BJP and independents won six seats each, while four seats went to the BSP. AAP and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won one seat each.
Three of the six Independents are supported by the Congress. Former Haryana minister and Congress leader Akram’s brother Shamin Khan eat Pratap Nagar has won ward number 8 of the block.
At the age of 52, Shamim Khan was the oldest candidate.
But he won by a maximum margin of 8,280 votes. Khan, who secured 14,833 votes, defeated BJP’s Shyam Kumar, who secured 6,553 votes. Agnivijay Singh (28), who won the contest from Ward No. 13, and Saloni Kamboj (28), who topped Ward No. 14 in Yamunanagar, are the youngest elected members.
