YouTube is set to launch YouTube Shorts, a short video platform that caters to smart TVs.

“In the coming weeks, this experience will be rolled out to TV models (2019 and later) and new game content,” YouTube said.

Shortcuts were introduced in September 2020 for mobile phones. In its TV edition, the feature will put people in the ‘driver’s seat’ of the viewing experience, according to the platform. Users have to use their remote to go to the next short video, instead of videos that play automatically.

“There will be special features to watch the shorts on the big screen. It’s easy to watch with others, and the big screen makes it a comfortable thing to watch,” said YouTube in a blog post.

YouTube launched Shorts on smartphones, following TikTok, during the pandemic. In July, the company said more than 55 million people streamed YouTube to their televisions.

Connected TVs are seeing a high trend in India due to cheap internet, availability of cheap models, increased promotion by brands, and better viewing experience compared to smartphones. The smart TV market in the country grew by 74% in the second quarter of 2022, according to research company Counterpoint, compared to the same period last year.
