If you haven’t seen it Acapulco, you miss it. The bilingual comedy is back for a second season and it does not disappoint.
It’s fun, heartwarming, has great acting, a well-kept 80s soundtrack and a brilliantly crafted story that leaves you wanting to jump to the next episode. The bilingual comedy flawlessly switches between English and Spanish in a way that isn’t forced or jarring, but rather natural.
For those new to the show, Acapulco The story of Máximo Gallardo told in two times – today and in the mid-80s. Present-day Máximo (Eugenio Derbez) tells an embellished account of his past to his young nephew Hugo (Raphael Alejandro), telling how his youngest (Enrique Árrison) got his dream job as a cabana boy in Las Colinas, the hottest part of the resort. holidays. A city on the coast of Mexico, as his desire for great things led him to become a millionaire living in a mansion in Malibu.
Season 1 we learn about Máximo’s big crush on Julia (Camilia Perez), his devotion to his mother Nora (Vanessa Bauche), sister Sara (Regina Reynoso) and his best friend Memo (Fernando Carsa). We’re also introduced to an army of diverse and funny characters that really round out the show, like Las Colinas resort owner Diane Davies (Jessica Collins), her seemingly clueless son Chad (Chord Overstreet) and the no-nonsense resort manager. Don Pablo (Damián Alcázar), who became Máximo’s mentor.
Season 2 is set in 1985. There are many changes in the resort to erase the lack of money, a new love story, separation and a journey of self-discovery. We also get a chance to learn more about each character’s back story, hopes and dreams. And today Máximo returns to Acapulco after many years for the funeral, as he keeps his angry nephew – and the audience – guessing who the mysterious person he tried to avoid seeing during his visit.
Árrison, as cheerful as his younger character Máximo, is happy with the renewal of the program, returning to the set and seeing his members again.
“You don’t know how much we grow – our characters and us – when we’re on set. We’ve gotten to know each other a lot and we’re good friends,” he says. “I think we are a great team and the new season is really exciting.”
During an interview last year, Derbez, who is also an executive producer, shared that his goal was to create a family-friendly show.
“That’s why we went back to the 80s… It’s like, remember that time when everyone was happier? I was a kid back then but I felt like it was my happy place and I wanted to show that.”
The writing and production team certainly accomplished that goal.
For Árrison, working with Derbez was a dream come true.
“Imagine being a young actor of the biggest star in Mexico. It was a very big opportunity. I was very excited because I grew up watching his movies, his series. And it was very nice to get the role. I am honored to do this, to share this character with him.
Like his character Máximo, Árrison, who works with a language coach to improve his English, is determined to achieve his goals.
“As in the list … to dream a lot. And I dream a lot. I want to reach a large audience, get roles in Hollywood and always enjoy what I do. I love my work. I love my work. And the best way is to share it. So, I am preparing to do that. “
Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV. The finale, set for December 16, ends with a big surprise, leaving you wanting to see more.
This series deserves an update. We can only hope that Apple TV will greenlight the third season soon.
