In this age of digitization, there are many ways to fulfill your entertainment needs, short video content is one of them. These types of videos are short and to the point, and aim to deliver as much content as possible in a minute and a half. Two big players in this space are YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. There may be a third one called TikTok but since it is not available in India, it is better to compare between the other two. Between YouTube Shortcuts and Instagram Videos, Which Matters X? Let’s try to answer that.
Short YouTube videos
YouTube Shorts were released last year in 2021 and since then, video length has been limited to 60 seconds in portrait format. YouTube Short Videos were introduced when Instagram Reels and TikTok dominated the short video space. To counter those, YouTube came up with Shorts, using its huge user base of over 2 billion users. YouTube says it gets 15 billion views per day.
YouTube also has a big advantage because creators know what to create thanks to TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, while some users have adapted to the new Shortcuts feature, others have not. YouTube creators like MKBHD, Mr Beast, and others have started creating dedicated videos for their channels and feature content that they feel doesn’t need a long video, a short one will suffice.
Also, another advantage of YouTube is that people can switch to full length YouTube videos if they get bored with Shorts. Additionally, the experience is baked into the app so that users don’t have to download a specific feature. In addition, YouTube has started to push its Shorts platform to televisions, something that is not possible with TikTok and Instagram Reels.
Next, if you have YouTube Premium, you will get an ad-free experience that is not possible with Instagram Videos. For visual experience, swiping up or down is the same. The algorithm seems to be picking content based on what I watch most on YouTube, including tech shorts and car shorts. I also watch comedy but I don’t see that coming up a lot on my feed.
In addition, some of the featured content may return but rarely. On the other hand with Shorts, you can fully access your viewing history without requesting all data, as in the case of Instagram. In addition to that, there is a negative button that you can use to let YouTube know what not to recommend. I have noticed that this feature and algorithm work well and since then, I have not seen any videos that I told YouTube that I did not like.

Instagram has been in the short video business since 2020 and using TikTok’s ban in India, it soon became the alternative TikTok in the country. The Videos platform launched with 15-second, 30-second video options that increased to 60 seconds later and you could record a 90-second video. By 2022, the platform will have more than two billion users and the company says that 91% of its two billion users will watch at least one reel per week.
Instagram was one of the first platforms to copy the idea of TikTok and implement it in the form of Reels. Facebook, which owns Instagram, took advantage of Reels’ large user base and implemented it into its own app earlier last year. With the help of this move, the availability of Videos will be increased.
Another advantage that Instagram and Facebook Reels have is that users have more content to look forward to than just short videos. Users can view other people’s photos and stories, on each Facebook, you have other long videos, photos, posts, and news feed content that varies from person to person.
In my use, I think Instagram Reels quickly learned my likes and dislikes. He knows what I like to watch and shows me the same topics. Also, I don’t remember seeing that video either while scrolling which is also a good sign I think. This way, you will not see repeated videos but the same ones. In my experience, I think that users can be more creative with Instagram Videos than YouTube Shorts like that, when people just upload a clip of their long-form video that doesn’t fail the subject of short videos.
One of the things I don’t like about Instagram Stories is that it shows a lot of ads. When you start your swiping streak, Instagram won’t let you scroll through videos smoothly without showing you at least one message between every 5 empty Videos. When we compare Videos with YouTube Short, it has an advantage because it can download all ads with the YouTube Premium plan, thus adding value to the subscription.
Also, Instagram has a button I don’t like called ‘Unwanted’, buried in the three-dot menu, and that’s not something I like. It should be placed in front where the user can press quickly. With Instagram, though, I had a better experience because not only did I learn the techniques quickly but I kept up with the trends.
YouTube Videos vs Instagram Videos: Which is better?
YouTube Videos and Instagram Videos are good for different types of users. The type of user I am, I like Instagram Videos over YouTube Shortcuts because I like what Instagram recommends for me to watch and shows new content without repetition.
On the other hand, YouTube Shorts is like an extension to regular YouTube, showing you content based on your watch history. Because of this, it takes time to learn, and you have to watch new things again. There are many people who prefer this approach on Videos and YouTube Short is perfect for them.
But until Shorts can offer a variety of short-form videos, I’ll still turn to Instagram Videos if I want to watch memes, car videos, tech and more.
