NEW DELHI: International Videotex, a Noida-based smart TV maker, on Wednesday said it has become a strategic partner of Korean electronics company LG’s webOS smart TV platform. As an original design manufacturer (ODM), Videotex had signed an agreement with LG to produce TVs based on webOS, in July last year.
As a strategic partner, the company will get immediate access to web development and features. Such a move could help LG bring its latest software features to TVs for various brands in the Indian market, with Videotex responsible for testing and selling the features to brands.
ODM is involved in the product design process and has its own research and design tools. This gives manufacturers like Videotex the ability to attract a large number of products for sale compared to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who can only assemble or manufacture a product when all licenses and designs are given to them by a contract company.
ODMs also invest more in acquiring software licenses and establishing development centers than OEMs.
In this case, for example, Videotex now has a license from LG to use its webOS TV platform. In a statement, the company said brands like BPL, Hyundai and Daiwa are using LG’s webOS on their TVs. The company said it has manufactured more than 500,000 TVs based on the LG platform since it received the last license last year.
To be sure, this is not the first time Indian contract makers have signed deals with TV manufacturers from China. In September, Dixon signed a deal with Google to license its Android TV platform for use on TV commercials. Super Plastronics had signed a similar deal with Google in 2020.
Such agreements are seen as a priority for contract manufacturers to develop from OEMs to ODMs, which gives them the ability to deal with a large number of brands, types of equipment and price ranges over time.
