TVS Ronin, Track Test – autoX | Tech Reddy

Ronin is a step in a new direction for TVS. And, for its first attempt, TVS gets a few things right with the Ronin. Like a motorcycle, it is a highly engineered product. Whether it’s the fit and finish, the quality of the paint, or the touch-and-feel of the plastic bits, the Ronin exudes a rich and premium feel. Then, there’s the powertrain. It is powered by a new 226cc single-cylinder engine, which develops 20bhp and 20Nm. In daily riding, this engine will keep you entertained with its performance. The spread of torque is linear, and the engine offers decent poke at low and mid revs, meaning it’s portable everywhere. It’s a free revving engine too – revving at 9,200rpm. That said, revs start to slow around 7,000rpm; and, it is also very buzzy at high rpm. However, its short-speed 5-speed gearbox helps you extract every ounce of performance – yes, even on the track.

Although it’s an ugly motorcycle, the Ronin’s handling is clean. While it’s not the sharpest tool on the track, the balance and stability of the chassis is impressive. Thanks to its front forks – lifted directly from the Apache RR 310 – the Ronin has a select front. Yes, the suspension is tuned for a softer ride and more absorption, but nowhere does it feel harsh. It feels more like a motorcycle when you ride it rough. And, as you may have already seen, Simran managed to post the perfect time to leave.

But, now, it’s time to deal with the elephant in the room – Ronin’s design. To say it’s polarizing would be an understatement. While there’s nothing wrong with the design per se, the Ronin comes across as a motorcycle with a confused identity. On top of that, the Ronin – while less or less mechanically flawless – comes at a premium price. The price is higher than Royal Enfield Hunter. Granted, the TVS offers more kit, features, and a better ride quality, but then, if you’re buying a motorcycle for fun and nostalgia, how can you look past the big-engined and classic Royal Enfield. and more consistent design?
