TVS Eurogrip, launched in 2019 as an offshoot of TVS Tyres, has been the technical partner of the TVS One Make Championship for four years now. They invited us to the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai to see the Protorq Extreme radial tyre, specially developed for 150cc-400cc sports motorcycles.

The experience consisted of 20 minutes of track time on a lightly modified Apache RR 310. Right off the bat, the Protorq Extremes feel very grippy, while its rounded and extended shoulder profile feels natural at big lean angles. Even on the first run, when it is not warm enough, the tires grip well in the corners. And as you continue to ride, we found that the level of grip never drops, which is a confidence booster. My time with Protorq Extremes has been short, but Rishaad recently spent a track day weekend on the RR 310 and was equally impressed with the tires, saying they remained reliable even when pushed hard.

The Protorq Extremes grip very well even at trail speeds and feature a sporty tread pattern.

The Protorq Extremes are built using zero degree steel belts, which, according to the company, provide superior stability at high speeds. Likewise, the Protorq Extremes are ‘W’ rated, meaning they are rated at speeds up to 270kph. The tires have a sporty-looking pattern that not only looks cool but also helps shed water quickly, while maintaining proper wet grip, according to the company. We didn’t get a chance to test the tires in the water, so we’ll have to take the TVS name for granted.

With this travel itinerary alone, we can’t tell you how they fare in the real world and how soft the compound years are. Only detailed long-term testing will confirm that.

Silvio Montanari, from the TVS Eurogrip team in Milan, tells us that the tires have gone through an extensive testing process. The Protorq Extremes test was carried out on a Kawasaki Ninja 400 and a KTM RC 390 over 20,000km on the road. And this doesn’t include all the on-track testing the team has done, which also covers thousands of kilometers. While all TVS Eurogrip tires are manufactured in India only, they are tested in European, Indian and Japanese road conditions to ensure that they perform as intended, despite various external factors.

Besides letting us experience the Protorq Extreme on the road, the TVS Eurogrip also gave us a glimpse of what we can expect from the brand in the future. The brand is currently working on updating the Protorq line, which should be on sale by the end of the year, and will soon launch a series of Roadhound touring tires. TVS Eurogrip has introduced its Climber range of off-road tires and the Bee range of scooter tires in Europe and they will soon be offered in India. Going forward, the company aims to have the tire available on every type of motorcycle within the next five years.
