Three top Indian businessmen have been ranked in the November issue of Forbes Asia. It highlights 20 Asian women who have come up with strategies that have helped their businesses thrive despite the uncertainty of the new normal and three years of Covid-19.
Soma Mondal, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL); Namitha Thapar, Executive Director (India Business), MQ Pharma; And Ghazal Alah, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Honasa Consumer, is on the list.
Forbes said in a statement on Tuesday that some of these women have worked in hard-hit sectors such as shipping, property and construction, while others continue to innovate in fields such as technology, medicine and products.
The Asia-Pacific region has largely moved into a post-pandemic era this year as governments, people and businesses learn to live with COVID-19, it said. Other women on the list are from Australia, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
According to Forbes, “20 women on Asia’s Power Business Women list of 2022 have come up with strategies that have helped their businesses thrive despite the uncertainty of the new normal. Some operate in hard-hit sectors such as shipping, property and construction, while others continue to innovate in areas such as technology, pharmaceuticals and products.”
It added that since 2019, the women highlighted this year are new to the list, further expanding the network of female trailblazers in the region. “They were selected for their achievements in leading a business in their current roles and for demonstrating strong leadership throughout their careers.”
Ghazal separate
Alagh’s Honasa Consumer houses personal care brands Mamaearth, The Derma Co., Aqualogica and Ayuga. The company turned unicorn in early January when it closed a $52 million funding round led by venture capital firm Sequoia Capital India, valuing it at $1.2 billion. She co-founded the Gurgaon-based company in 2016 with her husband Varun, who according to Forbes in 2016.

It added that Soma Mondal is the first woman to become the chairman of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). He has led the steelmaker to record revenue growth since taking over the mantle in 2021. Annual revenue rose 50% to 1.03 trillion rupees ($13.7 billion), while profit tripled to 120 billion rupees in the year ended March 31, 2022, boosted by increased production as well as increased demand for steel products such as rods, plates and bars. During that time, the company has repaid nearly Rs 220 billion in debt.
Namita Thapar
“A business leader, entrepreneur coach, reality show judge and author — 45-year-old, (Namitha) Thapar dons many hats. As executive director of MQ Pharma, he oversees the India business of the Rs 61 billion ($730 million) Pune-based company founded by his father Satish Mehta four decades ago,” Forbes said.
It added that since taking charge of Emcure’s India operations five years ago, he has helped double its domestic revenue to Rs 2,500 crore by 2021 (latest figures available).
