Since 2012, Mumbai has hosted the Valley Run, a weekend just for drag racing enthusiasts—on two and four wheels. In 2022, more than 700 participants gathered to share their love of high-octane excitement, as well as race and appreciate the wide range of vehicles that came to show their speed around the clock.
The Valley Run 2022 event is where TVS Racing debuted a special, turbocharged Apache RR 310, in the hands of the famous Indian motorcycle racer Jagan Kumar. With this talented racing bike, the TVS Apache RR 310 has set a new quarter mile record. Time: 11.5 seconds, from start to stop. Kumar’s teammate, KY Ahamad, managed 11.9 for the second time.
What kind of modifications have been done by TVS Racing to increase the performance of this RR 310? Besides an electronically controlled turbocharger, the engine now packs a titanium connecting rod, and titanium valves. The piston is also a forged unit, making it lighter in weight and stronger than stock.
To reduce weight—and thus improve this racer’s RR 310’s power-to-weight ratio—TVS Racing changed the stock wheels to carbon fiber, instead. They chose to swap the stock bodywork and subframe for some lightweight carbon fiber alternatives, instead. According to TVS, that makes the race-spec Apache RR 310 37 percent lighter than the stock version.
What does that mean? The stock TVS Apache RR 310 tips the scales at 174 kilograms (about 383.6 pounds) at the curb. Doing some quick math, that means a 37 percent weight reduction would bring the drag race-adjusted up to a svelte 109.62 kg—or less than 242 pounds.
Other changes implemented by TVS Racing include the reduction of the ride height, in order to lower the center of gravity. The team also added an extended swingarm—a modification of the popular drag bike—to increase the wheelbase and help reduce the tires a little better at its sprint speeds. Additional modifications include the addition of a quickshifter, and wiring for a specific launch control.
Apart from the impressive new quarter mile record, Kumar also achieved a top speed of 195 kilometers per hour (about 121 mph) in the race for the Apache DR-Turbo. Congratulations to you Kumar, and to TVS Racing on this great achievement!
