Did Stanford University scientists produce a 3D image of what Joseph of Nazareth looked like in the first century?
That’s what a viral tweet and Instagram post says. If you believe it, you will think that the person who married the mother of Jesus, Mary looks like professional wrestler and actor Andre the Giant.
“Scientists at Stanford University have recreated (a) 3D model of the image of Joseph, the husband of Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ,” read the text overlaying the image of the image of sculpture of a man with long hair and a large face.
The October 29 post was marked as part of Instagram’s efforts to crack down on false and misleading information on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)
But the image is not a 3D image of the biblical figure. Andre Rene Roussimof, known as Andre the Giant, died on January 27, 1993 in Paris at the age of 46. 7 feet, 2 inches, according to his French passport.
Snopes originally traced the photo to Sketchfab, which bills itself as “the largest platform for creating and finding 3D models on the web.” Metadata shows that this photo was first published on the platform in August 2019 by someone with the username “mattewdc.”
We reached out to Stanford media contacts and did not hear back. But no evidence was found to suggest that this trend was related to any university program.
We conclude this claim to be false.
