Migrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia are at the center of the humanitarian crisis in Europe.
But a viral Instagram post falsely suggested that migrants are at the center of another crisis in Spain.
The Nov. 17 post shows video of masked men breaking into the store, running inside and coming out with bicycles, scooters and other items. According to the caption of the video, “Spain. The number of complaints about the looting of local shops by immigrants from the Middle East and Africa is rapidly reaching the country.”
This was announced as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false and misleading information on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)
While the Instagram post claims the video is indicative of a recent increase in thefts, whether by immigrants or otherwise, it is not. The video is from 2020 and features everything from protest to COVID-19 prevention efforts.
On October 30, 2020, Libertad Digital reported that people gathered in the city of Barcelona to protest the pandemic measures that have closed businesses such as bars, restaurants and theaters. The demonstration turned violent as some protested attack the police hurled barricades, rocks and other objects, smashing into the stalls. A Twitter post dated October 30, 2020, reveals the that video from an Instagram post.
The claim that this video represents a recent increase in robberies in Spain by “immigrants from the Middle East and Africa” is False.
