Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard (2022)
Actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have met in Virginia’s Fairfax County Courthouse in one of the most watched cases in history. Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation, saying she damaged his reputation when she wrote about domestic abuse in an op-ed from the Washington Post. Both celebrities testified at the trial, which gave viewers an inside look at the former couple’s tumultuous relationship.
Tot’s Mother Murder Trial: FL v. Casey Anthony (2011)
11 years ago, a Florida judge shocked the world when he acquitted Casey Anthony of murdering his 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. The high-profile death penalty case gripped the country as prosecutors claimed Casey killed her daughter to abdicate parental responsibility, and the defense said Caylee died from accidental drowning in the family’s swimming pool. Through all the damning accusations and overwhelming evidence, one thing remained clear: Casey Anthony was the most hated woman in America.
Menendez Brothers Murder trial: CA v. Menendez (1993)
It’s been nearly 30 years since Erik and Lyle Menendez faced their first trial for the gruesome murders of their parents. July 20, 1993, marked the beginning of a six-month televised trial that ended in two hanging lawyers, prompting Judge Stanley M. Weisberg to declare a mistrial. The brothers were finally convicted in a second trial that was not televised in 1995. Although both brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, there is a renewed outcry that they did not receive fair trials.
Jodi Arias Murder Trial: AZ v. Jodi Arias (2013)
Jodi Arias brutally murdered her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, on June 4, 2008. His body was found in the shower of her Mesa home with multiple gunshot wounds to the throat and head. At trial, Arias said his actions were self-defense. She testified for 18 days, alleging physical and mental abuse from her boyfriend. A jury found him guilty of first degree murder and he was sentenced to life in prison.
Scorned woman: CA v. Betty Broderick (1991)
Elisabeth “Betty” Broderick was convicted of murdering her ex-husband and his new wife in 1989. Betty took to his defense, claiming that their high-profile and contentious divorce proceedings caused him to snap.
Spraying Tan murder case: FL v. Adam Kaufman (2009)
Florida real estate developer Adam Kaufman is accused of murdering his wife in 2007. His defense said that Lina died of an unknown heart attack. The case first attracted national attention when the theory that he died of an allergic reaction to spray tan was revealed. The jury found Adam not guilty.
Attempt to kill Nanny: MA v. Louise Woodward (1997)
Louise Woodward from Britain was charged with murdering 9-month-old Matthew Eappen. Prosecutors say Woodward violently shook Matthew, then carelessly threw him into a pile of towels. Woodward’s defense said Matthew’s injuries were months old. The case brought global attention to the term “shaken baby syndrome.”
