After Republicans took control of the House in the midterm elections, lawmakers announced measures to investigate President Joe Biden and his family during the congressional hearing. Meeting 118 of January 3.
In a press conference on November 17, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said members of the Biden family have been involved in a number of federal crimes, including wire fraud, money laundering and human trafficking.
“This is an investigation into Joe Biden, the president of the United States, and why he lied to the American people about his knowledge and involvement in his family’s international business ventures,” Comer said. House Republicans put together an interim staff report summarizing preliminary findings based on the whistleblower’s allegations, bank documents allegedly related to the Bidens and a review of a laptop by Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Comer had no comment in the report.
Comer said the US bank’s “suspicious activity report” allegedly related to Hunter Biden’s account was sent to the US Treasury Department, linking him and “his business associates to human trafficking of the world.” Comer did not say which bank issued the report or how Hunter Biden’s account was accessed.
Suspicious activity refers to financial transactions that indicate “criminal activity” such as money laundering and tax evasion. A report indicates that a transaction is tied to something illegal and does not indicate wrongdoing, according to the US Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

The GOP report said there were at least 150 suspicious activity reports allegedly related to the Bidens, and they were unable to review them. Comer said he will urge the Treasury Department to release the reports.
Comer did not elaborate on Hunter Biden’s alleged connection to human trafficking, but Republicans have previously accused him of hiring prostitutes. In a 2019 New Yorker interview, Hunter Biden denied hiring prostitutes.
White House spokesman Ian Sams told PolitiFact that the Republicans’ announcement was part of an attack on a political campaign “full of long-debunked conspiracy theories.”
